The Ultimate Guide to Web Design Scholarships

If you’re planning to secure a Web design education, then financial constraints may be on your mind. There are many ways to find money for college courses, but the number of funds available may confuse you. The following information can help you weed through your choices so you can find your college gold mine through scholarships.

The best way to find any type of funds initially is through FAFSA, or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Maybe the word “free” caught your eye, as this application is free, and it is the best way to gather all the information you’ll need to apply for other forms of financial aid as well. You can fill the forms out online, and the instructions are easy to follow. Additionally, many other aid programs may not work with you unless you file a FAFSA first.

The FAFSA is one way to obtain funds from many different sources, including government funds such as PELL Grants, scholarships and government loans. The loans usually are provided at a much lower interest rate than those obtained through banks or other financial institutions. If you’re offered loans through FAFSA, take them – you always can return the loan money if you find funds through other scholarships or grants later. You can fill out the FAFSA before you decide upon a college and before you’ve been accepted as well. Make a list of all the colleges you’ve applied to, and use this information to fill out the FAFSA form.

The difference between loans and scholarships or grants is that you need to pay back loans. You do not need to pay back scholarships or grants, so you want to find more money from the latter two options. This “free” money is granted based upon one or all of the following reasons: Great grades, financial need and/or membership or application to special organizations. One way to find these monies is through the college’s financial aid office.

The college(s) you choose and that accept you can provide you with information about scholarships that might be specific to those schools. For instance, one school may have a scholarship based upon applicants who are from a certain state, so that scholarship may not apply to you. Other colleges may have scholarships designed specifically for Web designers who maintain a certain grade average. Other colleges may not offer any scholarships at all.

When a college doesn’t offer scholarships, searches for other funds outside the college may be necessary. You can search for art or design scholarships, competitions that provide funds for college and money designed for certain segments of the population. For instance, if you are the son or daughter of a U.S. Veteran, you could be eligible for funds. Some scholarships, such as money for people who have various diseases, poor eyesight or who belong to specific organizations, can help you through college.

Although scholarships are considered “free” money, you must work to obtain the funds. It’s up to you to search for available funds, to apply for the money and to meet all guidelines. While this ‘work’ is best done before you attend college, many funds are not available to college students until after the freshman year. The best way to stay in the running for any Web design or other scholarships is to maintain a high grade point average (GPA) and to create a great portfolio in college. Your diligence and skills can go far in helping to pay for a college education in Web design.
